Letters: County Executive Steve Schuh's budget showed more than enough commitment to schools

School spending

I am very disturbed by the comments of Julie Hummer, the president of the Anne Arundel County school board. She called for raising taxes for Anne Arundel County citizens so that the school board budget can be fully funded.

County Executive Steve Schuh funded 98 percent of the requested budget from the school board. Let's be real, there wasn't that much red-marking then.

There is a state minimum the county must give the county school board for funding. This year the county executive gave $12 million over the state minimum. Over the past four years, he has given over $45 million over the state minimum. This shows a real dedication to our children and our communities.

Julie Hummer, on the other hand, thinks this is not enough. She would rather see you pay much more in taxes, to the tune of many millions of dollars. Do you want that? Do you want to see road work not happen? Or would you want to see fewer police and fire and emergency medical services personnel out there as we face our greatest struggle with opioids?

Anne Arundel County Public Schools is one of the best school systems in the United States, and has some of the best schools. County Executive Schuh is working to keep that. The funding that he provided in this budget will go a long way.
